Falling in Love, But Make It Cinematic

Okay, so as much as I’m in my book era, I’m also a certified movie girlie—especially when it comes to rom-coms or literally any movie with romance in it. The main reason? The way the main characters fall in love. Like, the slow burn, the banter, the accidental touches, the dramatic confessions—I eat that up every time.

And then it hit me: why not make a full list of movies (and TV shows, because some of the best love stories are in long-form storytelling) where the main characters have that peak Main Character Love™? You know, the kind that makes you want to fall in love, book a spontaneous trip to Paris, or dramatically run through an airport.

So, here’s a solid lineup of movies and shows where romance isn’t just a subplot—it’s THE plot.

20 Movies & TV Shows with Main Character Love

1. Pride & Prejudice (2005)

The blueprint. The longing stares, the hand flex, the “You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.” Mr. Darcy, you will always be famous.

2. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

Enemies to lovers? Check. A grand romantic gesture in the form of Heath Ledger singing Can’t Take My Eyes Off You? Also check.

3. Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

Rich people drama plus one of the most swoon-worthy proposals ever? Say less.

4. Bridgerton (2020–Present)

Period drama + scandal + slow burn + orchestral pop covers? The Daphne & Simon season and Anthony & Kate season are straight-up cinematic romance perfection.

5. The Notebook (2004)

A romance so intense it made people believe in forever (or at least in writing dramatic letters).

6. La La Land (2016)

Love, dreams, and heartbreak all wrapped in stunning cinematography. That ending still hurts, though.

7. Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

Messy people finding love in their chaos? This is for the dysfunctional but adorable lovers.

8. Set It Up (2018)

One of the best modern rom-coms. Fake matchmaking turns into real love? Chef’s kiss.

9. Love, Rosie (2014)

A will-they-won’t-they situation that spans YEARS, but the payoff? Worth it.

10. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)

Fake dating supremacy. Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky set the standard.

11. The Proposal (2009)

Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds? Comedy AND chemistry. Plus, a whole fake marriage trope.

12. When Harry Met Sally (1989)

Best friends turned soulmates with iconic lines and that New Year’s Eve speech.

13. Moulin Rouge! (2001)

A tragic yet breathtaking romance with a killer soundtrack. Love, but make it dramatic.

14. Titanic (1997)

The love story so powerful it made people debate whether Jack could’ve fit on the door.

15. Call Me by Your Name (2017)

A summer love that’s both beautiful and heartbreaking.

16. Persuasion (2022)

Dakota Johnson’s version is controversial, but Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth’s love story? Timeless.

17. Fleabag (Season 2, 2019)

A priest shouldn’t be this romantic, yet here we are. The “It’ll pass” scene? I still haven’t recovered.

18. The Summer I Turned Pretty (2022–Present)

The childhood crush to love triangle trope done right. Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah? No wrong answers.

19. About Time (2013)

Time travel + romance? This movie is equal parts adorable and devastating.

20. Your Name (2016)

An anime movie that will make you believe in soulmates. If you haven’t seen it, fix that immediately.

This list barely scratches the surface, but these are the stories that gave us Main Character Love™ in its most iconic forms. If you’re in the mood to feel all the feelings, grab some popcorn (and maybe tissues) and start watching.
